Four-Year-Old Kindergarten
Kindergarten is a pivotal time in a child’s life to learn, connect and play.
Kindergarten Program
Independence, cooperation and school readiness are the focus of our Kindergarten program and take place through their play and interactions with each other.
Our program encompasses children’s interests, as well as essential skills to succeed in the school environment. Through a play-based approach to learning, children engage freely in a variety of activities and experiences, as well as in structured group time focused on intentional teaching.
We have a strong emphasis on children’s early emergent literacy skills through learning about letters and phonics, daily story time and an on-site library available for children to borrow books to take home. We also use STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Mathematics) learning within our classroom both within free play learning environments as well as during group time learning.
Extension programs
An exciting extension to our kindergarten program is our Community and Bush Kinder. During our Community Kinder, children are able to learn about the world around them by venturing outside the centre and into the local community. This program works on a monthly rotating roster with small groups of 6-8 children. Outings may include going to the Post Office, the Green Grocer, cultural restaurants or even a short trip on the train. Each term we also arrange whole group community excursions, which include visits to the Clayton Library and St Peter’s Primary School.
Bush Kinder is a great opportunity for children to learn about and connect with nature. Visits to the nearby park offer the children ample opportunities to play, explore, learn and discover the unique Australian flora and fauna. Being immersed in nature supports the children to extend their imagination, skills and development as they are encouraged to interact with the natural environment with curiosity and respect. This may occur by children building a cubby house with sticks, using their imaginations by “cooking on a campfire”, or testing their physical capabilities of climbing a tree.
Special excursions are our children’s favourite part of our kindergarten program. Each year we plan excursions based on the children’s interests and over the years have been on many different adventures. Excursions have included trips to the beach, the Melbourne Zoo, the Aquarium, Healesville Sanctuary and Scienceworks. These excursions also provide great opportunities for school readiness as children practice important skills, such as exposure to new experiences, social skills, following safety rules and embracing the unfamiliar.
